We were given liquids that contains either acid, alkaline or methyl orange. We were also given blue and red litmus paper which reacts to acids and alkaline. We were suppose to find out if the liquid is acidic, alkaline or neutral by using the following indicators: blue and red litmus paper and methyl orange.
These are some of the materials we had:

First we tested sodium hydroxide using red litmus paper, blue litmus paper and methyl orange. The results are as shown below.
First we tested sodium hydroxide using red litmus paper, blue litmus paper and methyl orange. The results are as shown below.
As the pictures show, sodium hydroxide turned red litmus paper to blue, did not change the color of blue litmus paper and turned methyl orange to yellow. From what we have learned, we concluded that sodium hydroxide contains alkaline.
Next we tested hydrochloric acid and the results is as shown in the pictures below:

Our next liquid tested is salt water.
*when we put salt water on the blue litmus paper, it started to create red spots (as seen in the forth picture above). We thought it was because we did not wipe the tile clean and the previous liquid was still on the tile and it mixed with the salt water and the blue litmus paper. We regretted not being accurate but from the other indicators, we realised that salt water was neutral.
Next liquid tested is tap water.
The tap water and showed the exact same result as the salt water which makes tap water a neutral.
Our next liquid is ethanoic acid.
Our next liquid is ethanoic acid.
Our results shows the red litmus paper remaining red, blue litmus paper turning red and methyl orange turning red. The results shows that ethanoic acid is acidic.
I did not get pictures of 7up but the results shown is the red litmus paper remaining red, blue litmus paper turning red and methyl orange turning red which concludes that 7up is acidic.
Here are pictures of the final results of each liquid with methyl orange:
